Dental Assisting
With a certificate in Dental Assisting, you can find a way to utilize both communication and technical skills in flexible and interesting work environments. Work chair-side with dentists as part of a dental care team to make patients comfortable. Our program trains dental assistants for work that involves direct patient care, lab duties and general office tasks. If you like to work with your hands doing a variety of skills, this could be the career for you.
To pursue a career in dental assisting, applicants will need the following skills:
- Communication: Excellent verbal and non-verbal communication with patients, dentists, and other staff. This includes explaining procedures, providing aftercare instructions, and active listening.
- Empathy and Compassion: Understanding and responding to patients' needs, especially those who are anxious or in pain, to create a comfortable experience.
- Attention to Detail: Meticulousness in all tasks, from sterilizing instruments to recording patient information, to ensure accuracy and patient safety.
- Organizational Skills: Keeping instruments, records, and schedules well-ordered for efficiency.
- Dexterity: Strong manual dexterity for handling small instruments and working in tight spaces.
- Problem-Solving: The ability to think critically and address unexpected issues or patient concerns.
- Professionalism: Maintaining a professional demeanor, appearance, and communication style.
- Teamwork: Collaborating effectively with the dentist, hygienist, and other dental staff.
- Adaptability/Flexibility: Being able to adjust to changing schedules or unexpected situations.
- Initiative/Proactivity: Anticipating needs and taking action without being prompted.
Scope of Practice
In the state of New Mexico, dental assistants can do the following:
Legally operate dental x-ray equipment and perform dental radiographic procedures if they meet the following criteria.
- Study by independent preparation or in a training course on radiation health and safety within the past 36 months.
- Have assisted with or observed five cases of full mouth series intraoral radiographs (or fi ve extraoral radiographs, if applying for limited certificate).
- Pass the national DANB Radiation Health and Safety (RHS) exam.
- Apply to the NM Board of Dental Health Care for a training permit, valid for six months.
- Pass a state radiography clinical exam, within six months of passing the DANB RHS exam.
- Pass the New Mexico jurisprudence exam (take-home).
- Apply to the New Mexico Board of Dental Health Care for certification to perform radiography.
Under Indirect Supervision
- Rubber cup coronal polishing (after successfully passing New Mexico Licensure exam).
- Application of topical fluoride (after successfully passing New Mexico Licensure exam).
- Pit and fissure sealant application (after successfully passing New Mexico Licensure exam).
- Administer nitrous oxide with the dentist’s authorization.
- Any basic supportive dental procedure, not excluded elsewhere in rule or in statute.
- Perform infection control and occupational safety procedures.
- Perform other duties not specified by this state’s dental practice act.
Functions NOT Permitted by Dental Assistants in New Mexico Functions
- Final impressions, to include physical and digital impressions, for restorations or prosthetic appliances.
- Removal of, or addition to, the hard or soft tissue of oral cavity.
- Diagnosis and treatment planning.
- Initial fitting and adaptation of prostheses.
- Final fitting, adaptation, seating and cementation of any fixed or removable dental appliance or restoration, including but not limited to inlays, crowns, space maintainers, habit devices, anti-snoring or sleep apnea appliances, or splints.
- Irrigation and medication of canals, cone try-in, reaming, filing or filling of root canals.
- Other services defined as the practice of dentistry or dental hygiene.
- Bleaching or whitening teeth without the direct or indirect supervision of a dentist.
- Laser-assisted non-surgical periodontal treatment.

The 老司机导航allup Dental Assisting Science Program assists lifelong learners to develop clinically competent and culturally sensitive dental care for patients in the private, public and rural dental health care settings.

To empower compassionate, adaptable, and highly skilled dental professionals who elevate oral healthcare across diverse, public, and rural communities while advancing the standard of patient-centered care.
Program Goals
- Demonstrate clinical competencies as a qualified entry level dental assistant who can perform a variety of dental assisting tasks using state-of-the-art methods and materials in private, public, and rural dental health care dental settings.
- The student will demonstrate safe and efficient dental health care by being in compliance with both Federal and New Mexico state standards and regulations under the supervision of the dentist.
- The student will provide dental services with respect and compassion for all cultural diversities.
- The student will demonstrate legal and ethical behavior that adheres to the professional conduct in dentistry.
- The student will be prepared academically with the knowledge and skill competence to qualify for both the New Mexico certificate examinations and the Dental Assisting National Board examination.

The dental assisting program is one year of full-time study that begins in the fall semester and finishes the following summer semester. Class enrollment is limited. Students must meet the regular 老司机导航allup admission criteria and are selected for the dental assistanting program based upon pre-requisite scores, and high school or previous college records. A separate application to the dental assistanting program is required and may be obtained in the Heath Careers office. The dental assistant's range of duties is filled with possibilities. The assistant may comfort an anxious patient, bill insurance companies, and assist the dentist in providing treatment in patients. Through strong educational preparation, the dental assistant may assume responsibilities which are within his/her abilities and are recognized by the State Practice Act.

Dental Assisting Program Outcomes

- Demonstrate general chair-side skills required to work as an entry-level dental assistant.
- Perform entry-level skills in the application of dental fluorides, coronal polishing, and dental sealants.

Certificate in Dental Assisting
Course transferability: Medical Terminology and BLS CPR are requirements in other health career programs and may transfer to those programs.
Complete the following before applying to the dental assisting program:
- Enroll as a University of New Mexico-Gallup student.
- Receive a Banner ID and UNM email address.
- Visit the Financial Aid office to learn more about opportunities for financial support.
- Schedule an appointment with your academic advisor.
- Note: Individuals who have been convicted of a felony may not be eligible for licensure in the healthcare field. It is the applicant’s responsibility to contact the licensing board of the state where he/she plans to seek licensure to verify eligibility for licensure prior to making an application to the program.
- Risk Statement: All individuals interested in pursuing a career in Dental Healthcare should be aware that the dental field does have some risk of occupational hazards. The nature of the occupation could involve contact with infectious diseases (such as bloodborne pathogens), including AIDS, COVID-19, and Hepatitis. All students admitted to the program will receive proper instruction in standard precautions and the use of personal protective equipment to reduce the risk of blood and body fluid exposures.
Items to be submitted with the dental assisting application:
- Copy of ACCUPLACER scores for English and math. To take the ACCUPLACER, please see your advisor.
- Copy of current vaccination record.
- Proof of TB Testing.
Licensing and Certification
Successful completion of the 老司机导航allup dental assisting program may make you eligible to take the Dental Assisting National Board Certified Dental Assistant examination. You may also be eligible to take the State of New Mexico expanded function examinations in coronal polishing, topical fluoride, and pit and fissure sealants.
The program in dental assisting is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. The Commission is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education. The Commission on Dental Accreditation can be contacted at 312-440-4653 or at 211 East Chicago Ave., Chicago, IL 60611.
Our program has determined it meets professional licensure requirements with the state of New Mexico. It has not determined if it meets requirements in other states.
